BEDBUG REMOVAL SYDNEY

Bedbugs have increasingly become a problem in recent years, particularly on the increase in Australia. Bedbugs can be a source of intense stress and panic to travellers who experience them, and can create a huge problems for business owners of hotels, hostels or student accommodation due to loss of earnings through reputational damage.

Bedbugs - they love to eat where you sleep.

Bedbug bites are not associated with the transmission of serious diseases, though they are irritating.

A substantial infestation can lead to a huge amount of discomfort, panic and annoyance. They can also prove to be very difficult to get rid of. Bedbugs tend to be nocturnal feeders, so most bite activity occurs during the night.

There is a long association between bedbugs with shared facilities such as hotels, taverns, inns, hostels and student accommodation. In a residential setting, an infestation of bedbugs will be found in the bedroom.

Bedbug Lifecycle & Anatomy

Adult bedbugs range in size from around 4-5mm. They have no wings, and are oval in shape. Bedbugs are quite flat in appearance, though after a meal they expand. During their nymph stage, bedbugs resemble an adult.

Bedbugs undergo gradual metamorphosis during their development. An adult female lays eggs following feasting on blood. She then lays the eggs within cracks, ridges or crevices in furniture close to the sleeping area.

Within 7-10 days, the eggs then hatch into nymphs, who experience several moults before they become adults. Between each moult, the nymph must eat at least one blood meal.

A female bedbug may lay between 200-500 eggs during their lifetime. The lifetime of a bedbug can be as short as 45 days, though it could also be as long as a year.

An adult bedbug can survive many months between meals.

Signs & Symptoms of Bedbug Bites

When a bedbug bites, saliva with anaesthetic and anticoagulant properties is injected into the host to numb and thin the blood. This prevents you from waking up while the bedbug is taking its meal.

Bedbugs carry out a small number of bites whilst feeding (usually around three to four) which are organised in a line on the skin. Sometimes people have no reaction to a bedbug bite at all, though normally results in localised swelling and mild to severe itching/irritation when the sleeper awakes.

Bedbug bites don't usually require any treatment though there may be some secondary issues caused by persistent scratching, in which case a topical antiseptic cream or antibiotic may be required. If any secondary infections become more severe, please consult with your doctor.

The linear pattern can often (but not always) distinguish bedbug bites from flea bites, which are generally placed in a more random pattern. Bedbug bites manifest themselves as raised red welts on the skin due to the allergic reaction caused by the bugs saliva, whereas flea bites appear similar to mosquito bites.

It is important, however, to investigate the cause of the bites and irritation before taking the appropriate corrective action. If you are in any doubts, contact us for specialist pest control advice.

Some of the signs of the presence of a bedbug infestation may be:

  • Blood spots on sheets
  • Evidence of eggs cemented to similar surfaces as above
  • Discovery of discarded skins from moulted nymphs
  • Small dark brown excrement markings on bedding
  • Evidence of bugs in cracks, furniture, bedding, behind wallpaper or between books.

What Should I Do If I Have Bedbugs?

If you discover a bedbug infestation in the house:

  • Clean all fabrics in hot water and dry on a high heat. This includes bedding, linen, curtains and clothing.
  • Scrub and vacuum the mattress, making sure all bedbugs and eggs are removed.
  • Purchase a mattress case and then seal the mattress within it. Keep this sealed for at least a year.
  • Alternatively, dispose of the mattress and replace. Ensure the infestation is cleared from the house otherwise the new mattress will be at risk also.
  • Shake, scrub and vacuum out all luggage.
  • Inspect possible hiding places for the presence of bugs.
  • Repair cracks, peeling wallpaper or other potential hiding places.

The use of steam cleaners is effective in removal of bedbugs. You may also wish to use an insecticide in floor cracks.

Bedbug Habits

All bedbugs - be it male, female or nymph are nocturnal bloodsuckers. During the daytime bedbugs hide around the environment in cracks or crevices, wood, trash or in bedroom furniture including the bed.

By night time, they are lured out by the increased temperature of a host to feed on, which is normally human.

Bedbugs then feast on the blood of their host, which is over with in a matter of minutes. Brimming from their meal, the bedbugs then drop off the host and return to their hiding place.

After a meal, bedbugs are often incredibly social and are often found grouped together.

Though humans are the preferred food source of bedbugs, sometimes other animals such as cats may also serve as a food source.

How Did They Get Here?

Bedbugs are transported from one place to another mainly by humans. This happens mainly when people have been travelling.

Bedbugs are then transported between locations hiding in furniture, luggage or clothing. When transported by humans into a clean location, bedbugs can quickly establish themselves and form an infestation, moving from the method of transport to hiding places within the new environment.

Other than human transportation, the only means of movement bedbugs really have is crawling, which enables them to move between adjacent rooms in a house, or neighbouring apartments in a block.
